Challenge
As part of its long-term campus vision, the Museum of Flight sought to expand its facilities to create a dedicated destination for space exploration, STEM education, and the display of nationally significant aerospace artifacts. The project required careful master planning to integrate a new gallery into the existing Museum campus while accommodating the full-fuselage Space Shuttle Trainer and other large-scale exhibits. At the same time, the Museum needed to balance ambitious program goals with fundraising realities, aggressive schedule expectations, and budget constraints typical of a nonprofit institution undertaking a major capital expansion.
Solution
As part of our long-standing partnership with the Museum of Flight, we provided comprehensive development management services from entitlement through design and construction. Acting as the Museum’s trusted advisor, we coordinated stakeholders, managed project delivery, and aligned the design and construction teams around the project’s goals for schedule, budget, and visitor experience. In addition to overseeing development, we assisted the Museum in identifying additional funding sources to support project delivery and worked closely with the team to maintain momentum through an accelerated schedule. The result was a LEED Gold-certified facility delivered efficiently and with careful stewardship of the Museum’s resources.
Outcome & Impact
The Space Gallery expanded the Museum’s ability to tell the story of human space exploration through immersive exhibits, iconic artifacts, and hands-on educational experiences. Anchored by the Space Shuttle Trainer and other nationally significant aerospace artifacts, the Gallery strengthens the Museum’s position as one of the nation’s leading aviation and space museums while inspiring future generations of scientists, engineers, and explorers. Delivered under budget and on schedule, the project advanced the Museum’s educational mission and established a lasting cultural asset for the region.
