Challenge

The Museum of Flight sought to significantly expand its exhibit capacity and create a permanent home for some of the world’s most iconic aircraft, including Concorde, the first Boeing 747, Air Force One, and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The project required developing one of the world’s largest covered, open-air aviation galleries while navigating complex site, permitting, and environmental considerations adjacent to an active museum campus and Boeing Field. Delivering a structure capable of spanning and protecting aircraft of vastly different sizes while remaining cost-effective presented a significant engineering and construction challenge.

Solution

Building on our long-standing relationship with the Museum of Flight, we provided development management leadership from early planning through construction. Our team guided land ownership transfers, entitlements, permitting, budgeting, team procurement, and project delivery while aligning stakeholders around a shared vision. Leveraging a trusted project team that had successfully completed 3 previous Museum projects together, we fostered early collaboration between the architect, structural engineer, and contractor to optimize the Pavilion’s structural design. This integrated approach led to the development of span-specific trusses that generated significant material and cost savings while maintaining the ambitious architectural vision.

Outcome & Impact

The Aviation Pavilion became the largest expansion in the Museum of Flight’s history, adding more than 140K SF of exhibit space and creating one of the world’s largest covered, open-air aviation galleries. The facility provides a permanent, protected home for more than 20 historic aircraft while dramatically enhancing the visitor experience and educational mission of the museum. As a highly visible landmark along Boeing Field, the Pavilion strengthens the Museum of Flight’s position as one of the world’s premier aviation museums and creates an enduring cultural asset for the region.
