Challenge
The challenge for Expedia’s The Prow project was to seamlessly integrate a biophilic retreat meeting space into the broader landscape master plan that connects staff and executives to the natural environment. The design needed to reflect the character of the Pacific Northwest through the use of indigenous materials and landscape elements, while responding to the site’s topography through a series of cascading plateaus that support gathering, collaboration, and connection to nature.
Solution
The solution for The Prow centered on creating a low-profile, landscape-integrated retreat that reflected Expedia leadership’s vision for a space focused on gathering, collaboration, and connection to nature. We brought together the client, architect, and landscape architect to ensure the vision was carried through every aspect of the design, incorporating indigenous Pacific Northwest materials, cascading terraces, and expansive views of Elliott Bay and Mt. Rainier. A vegetated roof, designed to resemble a wing or ship’s prow from the waterfront, visually integrates the structure into the landscape, while a dramatic roof cantilevers 50 feet over the patio to support year-round indoor-outdoor use.
Outcome & Impact
The outcome was a highly utilized retreat and meeting space that successfully realized Expedia’s vision for The Prow. The facility is consistently booked for meetings and gatherings, offering staff and executives a respite from the main campus while strengthening connection to the surrounding natural environment. Its low-profile, landscape-integrated design preserves views of Elliott Bay and Mount Rainier, while the walk from the main campus to The Prow creates a deliberate transition that enhances the overall user experience.

"From the day we were brought in, Seneca Group played a critical role in being the liaison between budget, schedule, construction managers, landscape, our firm and mostly the client. It was effortless and critical. We would work with them in a heartbeat."
