Challenge
Reimagining one of Seattle’s most recognizable landmarks required balancing preservation, modernization, and uninterrupted public access. The project introduced complex structural upgrades to a 1960s-era tower with decades of unknown existing conditions and evolving seismic requirements. Custom-designed systems, tight tolerances, and suspended construction staging added significant coordination challenges throughout delivery. At the same time, all work needed to be carefully phased around daily visitor operations and public visibility.
Solution
We led planning, design, and phased construction management for the renovation of the Space Needle’s observation levels and supporting infrastructure. Our team coordinated closely with designers, contractors, and stakeholders to integrate structural glass walls, new glazing systems, mechanical and electrical upgrades, and the revolving glass floor experience. Construction sequencing and operational planning were carefully managed to maintain public access throughout the project. Ongoing coordination with preservation and permitting agencies ensured alignment with the landmarked status of the structure.
Outcome & Impact
The Century Project transformed the visitor experience while preserving the identity of one of Seattle’s defining landmarks. New floor-to-ceiling glass, upgraded observation areas, and the revolving glass floor reconnected visitors to panoramic views and the original architectural vision. Structural and seismic improvements extended the long-term resilience of the tower for future generations. Our client received an internationally recognized modernization that elevated both the experience and legacy of the Space Needle.
