Challenge
Following a major headquarters relocation, EMC Isilon’s rapid growth quickly created the need for additional space and infrastructure. After initially relocating approximately 550 employees into 140K SF on three full floors, the company expanded again just two years later, requiring an additional 46K SF and bringing the total footprint to 181K SF. The project became more complex when the building changed ownership during the process, requiring negotiation of a new lease and work letter. At the same time, the workplace needed to support a high-density software development environment and a rapidly expanding data center program that grew from an initial 20–30 racks to an 86-rack facility with generator backup capability – all within the structural, rooftop, and MEP limitations of the existing building.
Solution
We led site selection support, budgeting, contractor procurement, design and construction management, and move management across multiple phases of Isilon’s growth. Our team developed the project budget and schedule, managed architect and contractor selection, negotiated agreements, and oversaw execution on behalf of the client. We also guided the evolution of the highly complex data center infrastructure, coordinating solutions to address structural capacity, rooftop equipment constraints, and building systems limitations. Throughout the expansion, we worked closely with the project team to create a flexible, high-density workplace that could support continued growth while maintaining schedule and operational continuity.
Outcome & Impact
The project enabled EMC Isilon to rapidly scale operations within a cohesive headquarters environment while supporting critical technology infrastructure growth. Delivered on an accelerated timeline, the workplace and expanded data center provided the flexibility and capacity needed for continued innovation and hiring. Our ongoing partnership helped position Isilon for sustained growth during a pivotal period in the company’s expansion.
