Challenge
Allen-Gates Hall, originally constructed in 1986 as Lakeside School’s dedicated math and science building, no longer fully supported the school’s evolving approach to hands-on, interdisciplinary learning. With science programs relocating to the new Academic Building, Lakeside saw an opportunity to transform underutilized space into an Engineering & Innovation Center that could support robotics, engineering, fabrication, and future STEM growth. The challenge was to repurpose an existing academic building with aging infrastructure and fixed spaces into a flexible, future-ready environment while balancing budget constraints, sustainability goals, accessibility improvements, and the needs of a wide range of stakeholders.
Solution
Building on more than 20 years of partnership with Lakeside School- and our leadership of the previous Allen-Gates Hall expansion & remodel completed in 2012 – we are serving as Lakeside’s trusted advisor and project manager throughout planning and implementation. Our role is to bring together school leadership, faculty, architects, engineers, consultants, and contractors, ensuring alignment around project goals, budget, schedule, and decision-making. We have coordinated programming, technical assessments, conceptual budgeting, and project planning efforts while helping the team evaluate options, manage risk, and maintain focus on Lakeside’s long-term vision for engineering, innovation, and experiential learning.
Outcome & Impact
The project will transform Allen-Gates Hall into a future-focused Engineering & Innovation Center that supports hands-on learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and long-term STEM program growth. By repurposing existing campus assets and creating flexible, adaptable learning environments, the renovation positions Lakeside to expand opportunities for student engagement, innovation, and real-world problem solving while reinforcing its leadership in STEM education for years to come.
